چکیده

Little Sodus Bay (LSB), a freshwater embayment along the coast of Lake Ontario (LO, North America), is used as a canonical lake–embayment system to investigate the effects of unsteadiness and viscosity on the generally assumed inviscid flow between two reservoirs through a topographic constriction. It is determined, through a scaling analysis based on field observations, that for this general class of embayments, frictional effects, vertical turbulent fluxes, and unsteadiness are all important processes in addition to baroclinic and barotropic forcing. A numerical model (Princeton Ocean Model) is used to explore the effects of these various processes on the exchange flow between LSB and LO. The results indicate a shift toward internal hydraulic dominated flows and layers become blocked (or arrested) earlier than inviscid internal hydraulic theory anticipates. An additional physical process, namely a surface wind stress, is also investigated with regards to the traditional hydraulic regimes and it is found that wind, while altering the exchange flow, does not change the fundamental character of the flow.

Across-channel distribution of the mean and tidal flows in the Khuran Channel, Persian Gulf, Iran

The Khuran Channel, Southern Iran (26°45’N), is a topographically complex channel which is open at both ends. Owning to its particular geometry, this narrow channel is subjected to strong tidal currents.Across-channel distribution of the mean and tidal flows were obtained over a semidiurnal tidal cycle in the Khuran Channel where the highest tidal velocity in the third day of the seco...

Geomorphic controls on hyporheic exchange flow in mountain streams

[1] Hyporheic exchange flows were simulated using MODFLOW and MODPATH to estimate relative effects of channel morphologic features on the extent of the hyporheic zone, on hyporheic exchange flow, and on the residence time of stream water in the hyporheic zone. Four stream reaches were compared in order to examine the influence of stream size and channel constraint. Within stream reaches, the in...

Heat Transfer Analysis of Nanofluid Flow with Porous Medium through Jeffery Hamel Diverging/Converging Channel

In this paper, flow and heat transfer of nanofluid through a converging or diverging channel with porous medium is investigated. The fluid constantly flows under the effect of magnetic field through the channel. The diverging/converging fluid motion is modeled using the momentum and energy equations. The influence of some parameters such as opening channel angle, Reynolds number and Darcy’s num...
